Fated by RL Mathewson

The first shifter in the Pyte/Sentinel Series:

As the top Alpha male of Boston, it’s Drew’s job to keep his Pack safe, keep the humans from finding about their existence, try to pretend that he was fine with the way that his life was going and most importantly, not to give into the urge to kill Kara, the thorn in his side for way too long.

When fate steps in one night and destroys his world, he strikes back, but his new mate is more than he can handle…

Excerpt Fated by RL Mathewson

From Fated, the first shifter novel of the Pyte/Sentinel Series….
“I-I can’t feel my legs,” Drew’s Beta, Ryan, a harmless, yet entertaining man said from somewhere across the room.
Kara didn’t bother looking up or even ask if he was okay since she was still trying to figure things out. She’d thought that eating something would help, but so far all he it had done was attract the attention of two annoying werewolves.
Okay, to be fair, Ryan hadn’t been annoying. He’d simply walked in the kitchen, grabbed a spoon, sat down from across from her and started eating. That was it. He didn’t bother her, ask her what was on her mind, or more importantly, anything about Drew. For that, she’d allowed him to live when he’d hogged the section abundant with chocolate chips.
Then he’d shown up and she’d realized that her time for reflection was over, but once again, Drew took her by surprise when he simply removed Ryan rather violently, sat down and joined her for some ice cream. For the first few minutes she’d been on the edge of her chair, waiting for him to say or do something to piss her off and wreck the moment, making the decision to leave the city and try to make it on her own, but to her surprise, he hadn’t said or done anything to piss her off.
Yet.
But he would. She knew him well enough to know that he was waiting for the perfect moment to irritate the shit out of her. Her nerves were on edge, making every second worse than the last as her anxiety rose even as she prepared several well-deserved comebacks for whatever bullshit that was about to come out of his mouth to piss her off.
All she had to do was wait for it, she decided, narrowing her eyes on the bastard sitting across from her, eating ice cream like it was no big deal.
“Oh, God….my ass…,” Ryan groaned, letting her know that he’d regained consciousness as some point.
Instead of asking if he was okay, because let’s be honest here, she really didn’t care, she focused all of her attention on the man who sat across from her, baring her mark and waiting for the interrogation to start all over again or another rendition of his bullshit rules. So, when he suddenly took one last bite of ice cream, stood up and tossed the spoon in the sink before he left the kitchen without a word, she realized that the devious bastard was up to something, which unfortunately for her, intrigued the hell out of her.
Damn, werewolf curiosities, she thought with a heavy sigh as she pushed away from the kitchen island and decided to find out just what the bastard was up to.
“I don’t think that my arm is supposed to be bent this way. Guys?
Rolling her eyes, because the man was just too damn soft to be anyone’s Beta, she walked over to the man laying in a tangled mess on the floor, grabbed his obviously dislocated arm and with a few minor jerks, had the arm locked back in the socket.
She hated to admit this, but she was relieved when he’d finally passed out, because all that screaming and begging for mercy had actually started to give her a headache.

As she tries to keep her wits about her the sexiest man she’s ever seen claims her, only he doesn’t seem to happy about it. It’s clear that he doesn’t want her, but the stubborn man just won’t let her go even when it’s clear that he may not have a choice.

Excerpt Without Regret by RL Mathewson
Since there are no excerpts available on this one, I’ll post some quotes from the book. Enjoy!

“Asshole,” Ephraim muttered as he turned back around.

Chris chuckeled. “Is that really any way to talk to your favorite child?”

“You’re not my favorite,” Ephraim argued, but they both knew that was bullshit. “I don’t have any favorites.”

“Puhlease,” Chris said. “You fucking adore me…”

“Exactly what it sounded like, Munchkin. You want to live here in a Sentinel compound then you’re going to act like a Sentinel. You’re going to train and do your duties without bitching. Since you’re mated that also means that you’ll keep house for me, cook, doctor my wounds and spread your legs when I have excess energy.”

Tall, Dark & Lonely (Pyte/Sentinel Series Book 1)
by R.L. Mathewson

When the mother that abandoned them years ago suddenly shows up and moves them to New Hampshire, Madison has no choice but to go or lose her family. Shoving her dreams aside yet again, she tries to make a life for her siblings only to discover that nothing is going the way that it should. It’s really cold. Her fifteen year old sister acts like a hooker in training. Men act funny around her. Her boss is a real jerk. She feels like an outsider. Her best friend turns out to be a mouthy sixteen year old kid and the incredibly handsome guy renting the room adjoining hers not only hogs the bathroom, taking three showers a day and leaving her with cold water, but he also has a secret. A secret that she becomes a bit obsessed with and can’t let go no matter how many times she’s warned off.

Detective Ephraim Williams learned long ago not to show any emotion or allow himself to get attached to humans. What was the point? They came and went and he remained. This time wouldn’t be any different or so he thought. When his landlady told him that her grandchildren were moving in he didn’t expect much, well other than to be left alone. What he didn’t expect was to have to fight bloodlust every time he so much as caught the scent of his delectable neighbor’s blood or her bombarding him with questions every time she cornered him. If that’s not bad enough, a Master from his past has found him once again and is demanding his blood and is willing to do anything to get it, even using the beautiful, irritating, neighbor that makes him feel more than pain for the first time in centuries to get it.

Excerpt Tall, Dark & Lonely by RL Mathewson

“What the hell….” she murmured against her better judgment.
He gave her a lopsided grin. “I don’t suppose there’s any chance you didn’t see that?”
She shook her head. His smile disappeared as he sighed, “I didn’t think so.”
He turned to face her. “I need to taste your blood.”
She backed away from him. “I’m not letting you sink your teeth into me, you bloodsucker!”
As her back hit the table she reached back for a weapon. She found the roll basket and picked it up quickly hugging it to her chest. She began throwing rolls at him while she retreated away from him. “Get back!”
He ducked out of the way easily. “Or what you’ll throw butter at me?” he teased.
“I’m not kidding….I’ll….I’ll…” She looked around the room, there was nothing around that she could use, no crosses, no holy water. Damn it why hadn’t her Grandmother found religion? That would be really helpful at the moment.
Ephraim held his hands up. She was out of rolls. “Listen, I know you’re frightened and I understand that. I’m not trying to scare you, but I need to taste your blood.”
She threw the basket at him. “Are you crazy? I’m not letting you bite me!”
“I don’t want to bite you. Your blood is the last thing I want.” He looked pained.
That stopped her short. “My blood’s not good enough for you?”
“That’s not it at all.” He didn’t try to walk after her. Ephraim remained where he was, but they both knew he could get to her before she made it to the door so she didn’t try to run, yet.
“Wait, you do drink blood don’t you?” This was getting really confusing.
He ran a frustrated hand through his hair. “Yes!”
“You don’t have to snap it was just a question.”
He held up a hand. “My apologies.”
She nodded her acceptance. “Why isn’t my blood good enough? I bathe, I eat healthy, I don’t use drugs, drink or smoke. I’m not a vampire or anything but I would think that would make my blood attractive.”
His jaw dropped. “Are you trying to get me to bite you?”
“No!”
“Then why-”
“Because you insulted my blood!”
He pinched the bridge of his nose and laughed.
“You think this is funny?” Madison demanded.
“No, I think this is the most trying conversation of my life.”

Tall, Silent and Lethal by RL Mathewson

Never again……

Christofer lives by those words while Cloe would rather die by them……..

Too many years living on the run, of always being seen as nothing more than a monster and a freak, has left Christofer cold and distant. He hates his life, his fate, but he’s made promises and nothing on earth will stop him from keeping them….

Except for the woman that invades his world, takes him by surprise, aggravates him, gives him hope and makes him wish that things could be different, but they can’t…….

Not unless he’s willing to risk everything.

Cloe doesn’t need anyone, doesn’t want any complications, but things quickly change when she accepts a job that destroys her world and brings her the one thing that she never thought she’d find again….

Peace.

Excerpt Tall, Silent and Lethal by RL Mathewson

He closed his eyes and listened. He heard two heartbeats. One on the first floor, which was Marta’s and the other was on the second floor, which meant that Cloe had made herself at home.
Oh, hell no….
He took the back stairs two at time and raced towards the sound of her heartbeat. It came from a closed door at the end of the hallway. Without slowing down, he threw the door open and quickly stumbled forward, tripping over his own two feet from the sight that greeted him.
“Don’t you knock?” Cloe snapped as she grabbed a towel to hold up in front of her.
He opened his mouth to speak, but nothing would come out. His eyes were fixed on that damn towel that she was now using to cover up heaven. He glared at the damn thing, willing it to drop or shift to the side a foot or two so he could see that beautiful body again. Large breasts tipped with dark pink nipples, a flat stomach with just the slightest swell, wide hips and soft (he was willing to bet his life they were soft) butterscotch curls between her legs that were just begging for his devotion and he would give it too.
“The towel’s not going to disappear and I’m not dropping it.”
She couldn’t know that for sure, he decided as his gaze on the towel intensified. For another moment he stared, more like silently pleaded for it to move.
“You really need to get laid,” she said dryly.
His eyes snapped up to hers. Holy shit! Was that an offer?
Cloe rolled her eyes as she managed to wrap the towel around herself and tucked it in between her breasts without giving him a show.
Damn.
“Is there something that you wanted?” she asked.
You. “I-I wanted to…” he stammered before his voice trailed off. His gaze had dropped back down to the cleavage that he wanted to run his tongue over and he was back to willing the towel to drop.
She sighed as she walked over to him. Thank God because his feet wouldn’t move and he was practically screaming at them to go to her. She was taking the initiative. That was fine with him. He’d let her set the pace and then he’d take over and probably take her on every surface in this room.
Cloe gripped his arms, tightly. Oh, yeah. He leaned down to kiss her when he was unceremoniously shoved from the room. A split second later, the door closed in his face.
“But…but….”
He heard her soft laughter from behind the door. He stared at the door for another moment before he came to his damn senses. It was probably a good thing the door was between them so that his blood, well most of his blood, could return to his head. He was fucking weak, he thought with disgust.

Tall, Dark & Heartless by RL Mathewson

He should have left her and never looked back…….

That’s not how things played out for Caine, a nearly one thousand year old Pyte, who should have known better. Instead of walking away years ago, he has been watching over the only human who has touched his heart. He stays to protect her, at least that is what he tells himself. When trouble finds her, he knows that he should just cut his losses and walk away, but there is no fighting the hold the child, who has become a woman, has on him. Now they are both paying the price.

Danni knows that she isn’t technically a Sentinel and is putting her life in danger every time she goes out on patrol. She isn’t worried, she has a job to do. It is the only thing that matters to her anymore and she isn’t going to let it go without a fight. Unfortunately for her, she didn’t foresee her ex-boyfriend selling her out to a Master, being captured, getting locked up and stuck in a room with the cranky Pyte. The same Pyte that broke her heart years ago and wont stop glaring at her as if their little predicament is all her fault.

Excerpt Tall, Dark & Heartless by RL Mathewson

“Oh my god, you sick bastard!” Danni snapped as she struggled to hold onto the tree limb he’d left her on twenty minutes ago.
“Stop being such a baby and get down here,” he said, gesturing impatiently once again for her to simply let go of the limb and float the thirty or maybe it was more like eighty feet down here. It was really a simple concept and he couldn’t for the life of him figure out why she was having such a tough time of it.
“Get me down!” she snapped, which of course was followed by a little squeal as she opened her eyes and looked down before snapping them shut once again.
“Are you going to go get her?” Jax asked, standing next to him and still pointing that damn flashlight on Danni, which of course could be one of the reasons why she was squeezing her eyes shut. The man didn’t need the flashlight. Thanks to his Alpha blood he could see just as clearly as Caine could, but the rest of his pack couldn’t and they would bitch and whine if Jax shut it off.
He considered going back up there and getting her, but really, how would she learn anything if he did? When they left the comfort of their tent an hour ago they worked on controlling her fangs and eyes, but when it became obvious that she wanted to see if she could kick his ass he decided that they should move onto other things.
If all she wanted to do was spar he would probably be alright with that…..in time, but no, not Danni. She wanted to go full-contact and see if she could hold her own against him, or judging by that devious little smile she sported just before he floated her ass up to that tree limb, she wanted to see if she could kick his ass now that she’d turned. She wouldn’t be able to of course. Well, not now anyway since she didn’t have full control of her abilities yet and they would never find out one way or the other, because he would never be able to raise his fist against her. He loved her too much to do anything that would upset her.
“This is kind of cruel,” Jax said, making no moves to get the woman down, he noted. Then again the man knew him well enough to know that he’d simply grab her and put her sexy little ass right back up there. Actually, he’d probably put her a good ten feet higher to teach her a lesson about letting other men touch her. The other reason the Alpha wasn’t moving his ass to save her might have something to do with the little betting pool they had going. Not him, the pack. Jax bet that when she fell she’d break both legs, half her ribs and her arm.
That was pretty stupid, because he’d catch her before she hit the ground. He of course mentioned that when the stubborn pack decided that he couldn’t partake of the bet. Cheap bastards. For clarity sake he of course pointed out that if he didn’t catch her, which he was ninety percent sure that he would, that she would probably break all her limbs, a few ribs, her hip and her neck on the way down on the long thick branches that would slow her fall, but they wouldn’t listen to him.
“Do you have a better way of showing her how to float?” he asked, gesturing to the woman hugging the tree branch while muttering, “Don’t look down,” every other second.
Where the hell was the trust? He told her he loved her, so why the hell was she worried about getting hurt? To prove her love and devotion to him she should let go and get her hot little ass down here and finish tonight’s lesson so that he could get her beneath him again.
Jax pursed up his lips in thought as he studied Danni. After a long minute he exhaled long and loud while shaking his head. “I really don’t.”

Truce by RL Mathewson

Elizabeth knows what’s expected of her, perfection. She’s the daughter of an Earl and expected to marry well, say and do the right things with a smile on her face when inside she’s dying for a chance to escape. Thanks to an inheritance her godmother left her years ago, her chance will come with her next birthday. Her hopes of escape abruptly end when Robert, her childhood nemesis that she hasn’t seen in over fourteen years, comes back into her life and does everything he can to drive her out of her mind even as he steals her heart.

He hated her.

At least, he tried to hate her, but it was so damn difficult to hate someone that he couldn’t live without. He tried to ignore her, tried to focus on anything but her, but nothing worked. Somehow she made her way into his heart and started to make him want things that he never thought possible, made him smile and laugh even while she drove him out of his mind and started a legacy by turning him into…..

A Bradford.

Author’s Note:
This is first and foremost a historical novel. This novel is written differently than the other Neighbor from Hell books. Truce is about a man who takes everything too damn seriously and can’t let go of the past until the woman that he would love to hate comes back into his life and brings out the Bradford within.

Title: Truce (Neighbor from Hell #4)
Author: R.L. Mathewson
Publication Date: October 30th, 2013
Shelves: Historical; Romance;
Format: Kindle (284 pages)
Rating: 10/10

This is the story before everything…

Everything you love about this series, has its origin in this book. Truce tells the story on how everything started with Elizabeth and Robert Bradford in the 1800s.

I did not think I could ever love more a book on regency since this series has on of my favorite tropes at heart: neighbors from hell. If you love Pride and Prejudice, you will imagine Elizabeth and Robert hitting close to home.

“Once upon a time…”
“Are you fucking kidding me?” Jason asked, shaking his head in disgust.
“What?” Jarred demanded, taking a bite from his sandwich roll.
“You’re really going to start it like that?” Jason demanded, sharing a look of disgust with Trevor, who was inching his hand toward the platter of sandwich rolls.
…“Ow!”
“Those are my sandwich rolls!”
“Dad,” Jason said, not bothering to look up as he prompted his father to get on with it.
“Oh, right,” his father said, pointedly clearing his throat. “Once upon a time…….”

Truce starts with Jason doing a necklace for Haley, and his father telling him to story behind the tradition. Every Bradford has heard the story of their great-great-too many great-grandfather who fell in love with his nemesis and left behind their world as English socialites to sail to America.

I have read my fair share of historical romance novels, but this one was a bit slightly revealing on the lovemaking part, which I absolutely adored.

Without any spoilers, I totally recommend you to read the entire series, since it’s everything you want and RL Mathewson does a damn fine job with it.

The Game Plan by RL Mathewson

New York Times Best Selling Novel………..

The Game Plan

Spend the next 40 years in prison or break her lease early?

Normally she’d be able to say that this one was a no-brainer, but things have definitely changed since she was forced to move in across the hall from Danny Bradford.

A lot of things……

She wanted to get through one day, just ONE day without Danny Bradford doing something to test the limits to her control, but with that damn smile of his and his habit of leaving her contemplating manslaughter, she didn’t see that happening anytime soon.

He loved his family, but some days…….

It was too much, but that was okay, because his small neighbor living across the hallway provided him with endless hours of entertainment. Not on purpose of course, but did it really matter as long she made him smile?

Title: The Game Plan (Neighbor from Hell #5)
Author: R.L. Mathewson
Publication Date: December 27th, 2014
Shelves: Contemporary; Romance;
Format: Kindle (294 pages)
Rating: 10/10

So, you’d think that this whole neighbor hate stuff would become history, but no! it goes on becoming better and better. I totally love that fact that all the Bradford reply on their traditions and joke on Danny Bradford. The fact that he likes to torment his neighbor, only makes Jodi her future wife. It’s hilarious!

And OMG! She is totally crazy when she’s on any kind of medication! You will laugh out loud in the chapter, I guarantee it!

“That cocky, glitter encouraging, parking spot stealing, pizza teasing kissing bastard” as Jodi calls Danny, will make you love the Bradfords even more! The girls just measure the craziness around their family.
As a side not it felt a bit more to the story and makes me think if this medical issue with Danny was inspired from a real life.

The Game Plan had made Danny into a man who goes for what he wants, but I can’t imagine someone waiting that long to be with the woman he “doesn’t love” !

Since Jodi and Danny move to a new house, that means new neighbors, and well, there is one more Bradford living with them who is supposed to have his next love!

Title: Checkmate by RL Mathewson BLURB:

There’s nothing worse than living next door to your childhood nemesis, except maybe being forced to share your dream project with him, being blackmailed into going along with something that was just wrong on so many levels, and having your hot cocoa stolen by the person that drove you to drink it in the first place.

As long as she has plenty of hot cocoa, a pair of pliers on hand and is able to resist Connor O’Neil’s bad boy charm then Rory James should be able to make it through this project with her sanity intact. If not…..

She’d probably face a few more nights in jail, have a few more restraining orders slapped against her and lose her heart to the man that ruined her life.

This series is too much fun! The boys of the Bedford clan and now James’ clan are to die for… literally because they’ll eat you!

It was a nice way to introduce another part of the family, the James. Rory James is a girl among 5 big brothers and a father that sees her no different than a boy. That is how she grew up, working, thinking and fighting like a boy. Especially since Connor O’Neil made her life a living hell.

The best part of Connor’s life growing up was Rory. He tormented her but also protected her, because she was his to mess with. Years pass by having a town ban them because they cause trouble everywhere they are together.

What happens when a client hires both their companies to renovate a hotel? How are they supposed to work together and not murder each other?

Connor want to headhunt her brother to work for him, so he makes up a plan to blackmail her into faking a relationship with him. Too bad he quickly finds out he still loves her and the lines become non-existent too fast.

Perfection by RL Mathewson BLURB:

Zoe is used to taking care of herself and has long ago accepted that if anything bad was going to happen, it was going to happen to her. So when she loses her job over something most bosses would probably be happy with and her life starts going down hill from there she doesn’t expect it to get any better. She certainly didn’t expect any help from the loud jerk next door, but then again she has nothing to lose so puts her trust in him and hopes for the best. What she didn’t expect was the once in a lifetime opportunity that he offers her through an arrangement where they both benefit and no one is supposed to get hurt, but she should have known better because her luck has never been that good.

Like most Bradfords, Trevor has a soft spot for food, but that’s about all. He leads a pretty straightforward life and likes to keep things simple and that includes his relationships. He wants the perfect woman and knows exactly what she’ll be like. So when he discovers much to his horror that he’s thinking about his frumpy little neighbor he decides the best way to get his head straight is by working her out of his system. He’ll keep her around, but only until he finds perfection.

Title: Perfection

Rating: 10/10

I was surprised to see that books involving curvy girls still make me think some men out there enjoy them more than skinny shallow girls!

Zoey is in big trouble because she not only lost her job, but on that day her neighbor happened to take his disturbing to a new level. Her car broke down, he steals her laundry spot and also managed to come between her take out and blames her because she’s fat.

Because Zoey is a good tenant, he proposed she works for his uncle while also hiring her to do his housework. She’s becoming a lot more quickly but refuses to acknowledge her because she is not the type of wife he’s looking for.

It was annoying to love Trevor Bedford, but also to want to smack him on his head how shallow be was sometimes. He compensated with his charm and food, and how he managed to bring up Zoey’s self-esteem.
Loved every minute of this series! Totally worth it.

Title: A Humble Heart (Hollywood Hearts #1)
Author: R.L. Mathewson
Publication Date: December 17th, 2010
Shelves: Contemporary; Romance; Celebrity;
Format: Kindle (235 pages)
Rating: 8/10

Because I love R.L. Mathewson and her Neighbor from Hell series, I wanted to read more. That is how I came across A humble Heart. Dana Mathews is a complex heroine who knows how to be real. We get introduced to her world before she became a world know author and how she struggled with her life.

If you are looking for a funny series, this isn’t one, but it felt like watching a movie. Beautifully written, the story of how Dana came to be the woman today and how her life changed when Edward Pierce accepted to play the leading male actor to one of her books is everything you need.

Since I read on Kindle, I don’t see the number of pages and was actually surprised to see only 235 as the page number, since it felt I was reading a 500 pages long book.

Edward is one awesome guy who steps in and tries to build a life with Dana and her two kids. I have a soft spot for men who can love their step kids.

This book shows the struggle celebrities have when dealing with security and fans and how paparazzi can sometimes negatively affect your life. Let’s say this is an inside story of celebrities.

What would you feel if the world watched your every move?

Playing For Keeps (A Neighbor From Hell Series Book 1)
by R.L. Mathewson
Blurb:

Done with being the world’s biggest pushover, Haley decides that things are going to start changing. The first thing that she was going to do was to put a stop to all the crap that her aggravating neighbor put her through. What she hadn’t expected was to be sucked into his world, but Haley has a game plan and she won’t let herself forget what the bad boy next door is capable of.

The last thing that Jason expected was for his shy little neighbor to go Rambo on him over some ruined flowers, but he quickly got over it once he realized exactly what he’d been missing. After he decides to take her under his wing, he can’t help but notice how nicely she fits in his life. Now the only thing left to do was to convince her that this is anything but a game.

*Author’s Note:

This book would be on every Facebook rec post on funny as hell books to read. The whole series is one fun ride after another, so keep on reading the whole story.
Haley and Jason are so perfect for each other! I like my heroines to keep up with their men!
Playing for Keeps started a particular trope for me on very yummy neighbors! I have a category just for them here.
Haley managed to buy her dream home, only to be shadowed by Jason moving next door. For 5 years she avoided him and looked the other way, not seeking confrontation whenever he did something to annoy her. Well, that is until he threatened her Grandma’s tulips.
This was the beginning of a friendship where the two of them were thick as thieves. The slow pace on their romantic involvement left me wanting for more since they are too damn hot!
Things I loved about this book:

  • It was funny as hell!
  • How Jason is a food master! And his whole family too… hilarious food references!
  • Unpredictable here and there…
  • Left me wanting to read the whole series in one night.. (I did not manage to do that)
