“Wait for it” was actually my first slow burn book, ever, if I dare say so. I know, I know, what was I thinking?! I remember keep asking myself what was happening, because the pages kept on turning and no sexy time was happening, and I was quite confused because by now something should happen, and in the beginning I did not even know who the male participant was, because, well, I was wrongfully assuming that the bad guy will become good and bla bla bla…
I am so glad that my love for slow burns started with Mariana Zapata because she is absolutely brilliant and makes me swoon so bad, that when I figure it out that she has so far only 9 books out, I kept treating them as the very good desert that you want to drag out as much as possible. Yup! This happens sometimes, when I know that book is that good, that I start to read slowly so I can enjoy it more.
“What do you want from me?”
“Everything.”
The books written by her are so good that I don’t even read any review, just dive right in because I know it’s going to be a treat!
What I liked the most about Diana Casillas, is that she is an incredible character and raises her two nephews, Josh and Louie, because her brothers passed away and their mother is not stable enough to raise them. She treats them as her own, while dealing with the loss of her most beloved brother.
“It was about everything. About life and death, and white and black and gray. It was about having to be tough when you weren’t used to it. About having to grow when you’d thought you were done growing. In the back of my head, I knew what I’d said didn’t make any damn sense. But how could I explain? How could I begin to tell him that I had lost a part of myself with my brother’s death, and I was trying so hard to keep what I had left together with duct tape and paper clips?”
“All I could think about as I stood there was that sometimes life gave you a tragedy that burned everything you knew to the ground and changed you completely. But somehow, if you really wanted to, you could learn how to hold your breath as you made your way through the smoke left in its wake and you could keep going. And sometimes, sometimes, you could grow something beautiful from the ashes that were left behind. If you were lucky.”
I was so caught up in the story and it was so beautifully written, that I cannot for the love of me give less then 5 starts to this lovely book.
The story of Diana and Dallas unfolds really slow, but what I liked more of it is that it made me discover and love Dallas at the same time she did, which was kind of surprising, because I viewed him as a jerk. He was so used to moms hitting on him that it made him so full of himself, but that only made it funnier to read.
We meet everybody when they start a new life I a new city. Her first night here she helps a stranger who is being beaten right in front of her house. My first assumption is that he will be the leading male character, but boy how wrong was I? His brother actually is. Soon-to-be divorcee, Dallas Walker meets Diana when she brings home his troubled brother. From there they make their connection when Dallas is couching her kid’s team and they soon begin to form a beautiful friendship, but not after some uncomfortable situations where he comes out as a real jackass.
I really loved that he waits until his divorce is over to reveal his feelings toward her, and their story is so beautifully written and with so much detail that all do is feel and feel as the pages keep on turning.
There is no reading order for Mariana Zapata’s book, but some characters will find themselves in other books. That should not keep you bothered a bit. I actually enjoyed finding out who they are and where they connect.
