Wrangling the Cowboy (Circle B Ranch #3) by Kennedy Fox

Bull riding is all Gavin’s known for years, but when it’s time to retire, he can’t let go of the reckless lifestyle. He finds a job that brings him to a small-town Texas ranch and face-to-face with the woman who snuck out after their one-night stand.

She can pretend she’s over him, but he’s not letting her go that easily.

Maize Bishop spends her days cooking and baking for her family’s bed and breakfast. The last thing she has time for is a relationship, especially when there are no single men within a hundred-mile radius. When a mysterious newcomer flirts with her over drinks, she gives in to his mesmerizing green eyes and goes home with him.

Now that he works for her family’s ranch, she’ll avoid him at all costs.

There are only so many places to hide, and keeping her distance is easier said than done. After months of giving her space, Gavin’s tired of waiting for Maize to admit what he knows they both want—a second round between the sheets. It may only take eight seconds to win a championship, but he’ll prove to her that he can go all night long.

She’s too young, he’s too arrogant, and together, they’re electric—the perfect recipe for disaster.

**Wrangling the Cowboy is a complete standalone and can be read without reading any of the other books or series, but if you prefer to read in order, start with Hitching the Cowboy as the characters and families do interconnect.**

Taming Him (Bishop Brothers #1) by Kennedy Fox

Alex Bishop is your typical cowboy.
Charming, sexy, and wears a panty-melting smirk.

Working on the ranch helped build his solid eight-pack and smoking body. He’s every girl’s wet fantasy, and he knows it too. Alex doesn’t follow the rules of your typical playboy bachelor. After wining and dining his dates and giving them the best night of their lives, he always sends flowers and calls the next day—even if it’s to say, let’s just be friends. His mama taught him manners after all, and his Southern blood knows how to be a gentleman. Still, that isn’t enough to tame the wildest of the Bishop brothers.

River Lancaster has finally met the man of her dreams. Too bad after six months of romantic bliss, she finds out he’s married. With a broken heart and blind rage, she books herself a ticket to Key West, Florida. Tired of cheaters and liars, she’s set on escaping to forget he ever existed. Who needs a man when there’s an all-you-can-drink margarita bar, anyway? That’s what she tells herself until she bumps into the right guy who can make all those bad memories disappear.

Even if it’s only temporarily.

Two weeks on the beach is what they both need. No strings attached, no expectations, no broken hearts. Too bad the universe has other plans—one that’ll change the entire course of their lives in just nine short months.

This is book 1 in the Bishop Brothers series. Each book features a different brother and can be read as a complete standalone. HEA guaranteed!

Title: Taming Him (Bishop Brothers #1)
Author: Kennedy Fox
Publication Date: January 30th, 2018
Shelves: Contemporary; Romance;
Format: Kindle (396 pages)
Rating: 9/10

I know I wanted to start this series for quite a while now and finally I managed to do it. Because of this and, well, cowboys, I went in blind and never knew what awaited me.

Kennedy Fox is an author I usually read, so that wasn’t a bit decision.

First, I got a bit confused because I though River was a boys name, and Alex the girl, so chapter 1 was a bit confusing. So, to recap, River is your h and Alex, the youngest of the Bishop Brothers, your hot cowboy.

They both find each other an connect on vacation. But everyone knows vacation flings doesn’t last, so after a beautiful 2 weeks spent together, they part ways.

Though Alex cannot take River out of his mind, he manages to accept the fact that she chose not to call him back.

But their vacation fling will have it’s surprise, as in a little bundle of joy, making River go to their small town and give the daddy the news.

This was a beautiful start of the series and I cannot wait to binge read them all.

Keeping You Away (Tyler & Gemma duet #1) (Ex-Con Duet Series) by Kennedy Fox

I never planned on returning to Alabama, but circumstances brought me here after years of being gone. Though Lawton Ridge is my hometown, I was hesitant to go back because of her —my sister’s best friend. The last time we were together, she was eighteen, and I was a broken soldier transitioning to civilian life.

Gemma wrote to me while I was overseas and we developed a bond I hadn’t anticipated. I crushed her heart the day I left, something I’ve never forgotten. But now that her dad is my new boss, life just got way more complicated.

Too sweet, too innocent, too good for a guy like me—I should walk away again.

After serving five years in prison for something I didn’t do, I’m constantly on guard. Though I’ve taught people how to protect themselves in a boxing ring, no one can help prepare me for my next move. I’m about to enter the fight of my life and face the mafia princess who put me behind bars. She thinks I fear her and will stay away, but she has another thing coming. I plan to make her pay, but that means risking everything.

I trust no one, but Gemma gradually breaks down my walls and exposes the pain I’ve hidden underneath. For her own sake, I should keep my distance, but it’s nearly impossible when I hear her sweet humming while I work and she slowly draws me back in. It’s a battle I didn’t train for, and one I’ll lose if I don’t keep my restraint—especially since she’s engaged to another man.

KEEPING YOU AWAY is a slow-burn, angsty romance wrapped up in an intense love story. It’s book 1 in the Tyler & Gemma duet and must be read first.

Catching the Cowboy (Circle B Ranch #2) by Kennedy Fox

Settling down and starting a family is something Diesel has considered, regardless of his one-night stand reputation. However, he just might be single forever since who he wants is off-limits—his best friend’s little sister.

He’s been in love with her for years, but betraying his friendship could ruin everything.

Rowan Bishop is over men, especially after finding out her boyfriend cheated and left her heartbroken. After graduating from college, she’s back home and has to face the one guy who purposely gets under her skin—her older brother’s best friend.

She hates that she’s attracted to him, but she’s willing to fight for who she wants.

Spending time together is a bad idea, but neither can deny the chemistry sizzling between them. Late night talks turn into spontaneous adventures and just when Rowan’s willing to admit how she truly feels, Diesel’s past catches up with him and ruins their picture perfect romance.

Chasing Him (Bishop Brothers #3) by Kennedy Fox

John Bishop isn’t your typical single dad.

Reserved, impatient, and utterly clueless.

Running the family’s bed and breakfast has many perks. Working long hours, picking up after the guests, and hearing couples going at it all night long aren’t any of them. Hooking up with girls who come to the ranch for horseback riding lessons? Best perk of them all.

That is until a baby shows up at his doorstep with a note claiming it’s his. Growing up on a ranch was anything but easy, but raising a newborn is proving to be the hardest task he’ll ever tackle. Leaving the bachelor life behind, his only priority is to hire a nanny who can teach him a thing or two about parenting—except he doesn’t anticipate her being gorgeous and quirky with an unhealthy football obsession.

Mila Carmichael has many talents—making balloon animals, creating origami art, and remaining in the friend zone. Often seen as one of the guys, she’s struck out more times than a rookie baseball player.

Seeking a new adventure, she flies to Texas to visit family and is offered a position she can’t refuse. Helping out a new dad should come easy to her, considering her past experience, but what she doesn’t anticipate is him being an attractive Southern temptation.

But that’s only the beginning.

While growing close to his family and falling madly in love with the baby girl who’s stealing their hearts, things are bound to get complicated. Everyone knows not to mix business with pleasure. That means no late movie nights, no stolen glances, and definitely no kissing behind closed doors. Too bad the universe has other plans—one that’ll threaten taking away the main thing that binds them together.

Excerpt Chasing Him (Bishop Brothers #3) by Kennedy Fox

John’s POV

It’s been three days since Mila started working for me and so far she’s been a complete blessing. I know Maize’s in safe keeping and that’s all I’ve ever wanted though I can’t say I’m getting any more sleep.

After lunch, I fall asleep again and this time I’m woken up by a guest bitching about a toilet issue. Usually, I’m friendly and have a smile plastered on my face, but honestly, I’m pissed. Mama caught wind of me snapping at someone and practically threatened to fire me, which I know would never happen, but it was a wake up call that I need more sleep at night and that’s not going to happen until Maize is sleeping in longer stretches. Any little noise I hear, I’m wide awake and then I can barely fall back asleep. By the time I do, it’s time to get up for work. I feel as if I could sleep for a week straight.

After falling asleep for the third time today, I force myself to stand the rest of my shift. I’ve had so many ridiculous things happen today that I swear it’s Friday the thirteenth. By the time I make it home, I’m so fucking exhausted that I can barely keep my eyes open. When I walk in, I see Jackson flirting with Mila and it annoys the fuck out of me.

“Jackson, kitchen,” I bark when Mila walks into the room to check on Maize.

“What?” He looks at me, slyly.

Leaning against the counter, I cross my arms over my chest and give it to him straight. “Listen. There’s a few rules you need to adhere too.”

He sarcastically nods his head, which pisses me off further.

“Don’t look at my nanny like that ever again.”

“Like what?” he asks.

I narrow my eyes because he knows damn well what I’m talking about. “I don’t need you scaring her away and leaving me without help. So don’t hit on my nanny. Don’t flirt with her, ask her out, and don’t you dare fuck my nanny.”

He arches a brow and crosses his arms as if to ask if I’m done—as if to challenge me on everything I just listed.

“Basically, stay away from my nanny. Got it?”

Jackson bursts out into laughter. He’s doubled over trying to catch his breath but I’m as serious as a heart attack, ready to punch him in the chest and threaten his life if he breaks my rules.

“Why? Are you fucking her?” he asks, laughing with amusement. “God knows you’re worse than me.”

“No. Hell no. Those rules are for everyone, and if you break them, I’ll break your fucking neck.”

He leans over and whispers loud enough for just me to hear. “But you want to.”

Evan Bishop is your typical hotshot doctor.
Hardass, brooding, and all business.

Instead of working on the family ranch, Evan broke the mold and became an ER doctor.
He’s good with his hands—in more ways than one—smart as a whip and is the definition of God’s gift to women. Being a gentleman is in his Southern roots, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t flawed. Exclusive dating has never been a top priority and his tragic past makes him stay at arm’s length. Deciding to let loose for a wild night, he takes a page from the Bishop brother’s relationship book and hooks up with a mysterious girl he’ll never have to see again, which is perfect for this self-proclaimed bachelor.

Emily Bell is a city girl through and through but is determined to get away from her family and past. All she wants is a fresh start and to make a name for herself in the medical field. No random hookups and no dating coworkers—that’s her new motto after being burned time and again. When she agrees to attend a wedding as a plus-one, she’s soon ditched and left to drink solo—but not for long. Mr. Suit is the ultimate temptation with his Southern charm, messy blond hair, and irresistible sex appeal. Everything about him screams bad news, but he makes her reconsider her rules just for one night.

After all, some rules are made to be broken.

They want the same thing—one night of passion then they’ll go their separate ways. No cuddling afterward. No next day phone calls. No awkward goodbyes. Too bad the universe has other plans—one that’ll be obvious when they report to work on Monday morning.

This is book 2 in the Bishop Brothers series. Each book features a different brother and can be read as a complete standalone. HEA guaranteed!*

Excerpt Needing Him (Bishop Brothers #2) by Kennedy Fox

Evan and I suit up in our surgical gowns, gloves and masks but before I can ask for help to tie me up, he’s behind me knotting the ties around my neck and waist.

“Thanks.”

He only nods in response without making eye contact. I see Veronica is already tying him up and that’s when I get the impression she’s his right-hand man. She always has his files ready for him, relays his messages, and I’m pretty sure she handed him a coffee yesterday afternoon.

She’s his work wife.

I giggle a little to myself at the term I’ve heard my dad use about one of his assistants. When you work in the hospital as much as we do, you’re more married to the people you work with than the actual people you’re married to.

“Something funny?” He shoots daggers at me.

“Are you seriously going to scold me for laughing to myself?”

“This isn’t a laughing matter. We have a job to do.”

I roll my eyes, but he walks off before he can see me. You’d think the guy didn’t just get laid last weekend or something by his bad attitude.

The paramedics rush in just moments later and the whole scene unfolds. Three stretchers are brought in with patients with minor injuries and Evan directs them to the three nurses to assess them. An unconscious patient is brought into trauma room one and when the last patient is rolled in, I follow Evan into trauma room two.

“Transfer on three,” Evan orders before counting and the nurses and I help him move the patient off the stretcher and onto the hospital bed.

“Patient is a twenty-nine year old female and was the passenger when she got T-boned on her side. Driver said she smacked her head and couldn’t get her to wake up. BP was at ninety over eighty,” one of the paramedics tells us. Veronica is already hooking her up to the blood pressure cuff and heart rate tracker.

“That blood pressure is too low,” Evan mutters, unwrapping his stethoscope from his neck and listening to her heart. “Her heartbeat is slow and her breathing is unsteady. Bag her.”

Moments later, Veronica hands me the equipment to manually ventilate her and Evan watches as I push the tube down her throat and into her lungs. I’ve done this hundreds of times but with his piercing eyes on me, I get nervous.

“Dr. Bell…” His warning tone has my nerves on fire.

“I’ve got it,” I say, attaching the bag to the mask and pumping.

Once he checks for himself, I roll my eyes when his expression doesn’t change. He orders Veronica to check the head wound where blood is pooling and Heather places an IV in the woman’s arm so she can administer medication.

“She has a pretty deep cut near her right temple. Going to clean it up and probably need some stitches,” she tells Evan.

“She might have some internal bleeding, so let’s get radiology in here to do some scans while her breathing is stable for now.”

Evan gets radiology within minutes since they’re in the next room. Once the x-rays are done and processed, we see she has a bleed in her spleen.

“Ruptured spleen,” Evan confirms what I already knew.

“Her abdomen must’ve been hit pretty hard,” I say, handing off the ventilator bag to Heather so I can look at the x-rays more closely.

“Or she wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.” Evan’s body tenses and his eyes go dark. His mood shifts, and I wonder what the hell just happened. “Veronica, she needs to be prepped for surgery. Page me when she’s in recovery,” he orders before facing me. “Stay with Veronica and help her prep the patient then find me.”

He walks off before I can respond.

I do as he says and help Veronica while the trauma surgeon comes in all ready to go. We roll her down to the OR and once she’s securely inside, Veronica and I walk out.

“Good job, Dr. Bell,” she praises me, which takes me off guard a bit. I don’t even feel like I did that much, but I smile at her compliment.

“Thanks. You too. You’re the superhero of nurses.” I smile.

She blushes, a small smile gracing her lips. “Thanks, I love my job. Dr. Bishop makes it easy to do my job well.”

My stomach twists at her words, wondering if that means what I’m thinking. Does Veronica have a thing for Evan? I mean, I wouldn’t blame her in the least, but this is only my second shift so who the hell knows.

“It’s obvious you two make a great team. I envy that.”

“We do. It’s nice.” She smiles wide, and that’s all the confirmation I need that she definitely has feelings toward him.

Once we’re back to the ER, I find Evan and wait for his next order. The other three patients are in beds and all stabilized with minor injuries. The other unconscious patient is a child and I rush in to help once Evan calls for my assistance.

“She’s crashing,” one of the nurses shouts, announcing the code.

Evan grabs the crash cart and I add the gel to the paddles before I charge it to three hundred and he shouts, “Clear!”

He shocks her chest and her heart begins beating again. She’s so little, I’m relieved that we don’t have to do it again.

“Bag her,” Dr. Moody orders.

Veronica hands me the tube and supplies, but the tube is too big. “Her throat is too swollen.”

“Here,” she says, handing me a smaller sized one.

I’m quick to grab it and attempt it once again with no luck.

“Veronica, take over for Dr. Bell.” Evan’s tone is cold and harsh.

“I can do it,” I bite out, trying again but the way he’s scolding me with his eyes has my nerves all over the place. I can do this in my sleep, so my frustration grows the longer it takes.

“Veronica, now.”

“I said I got it!” I shout, but it doesn’t matter because Veronica grabs the tube from me and pushes me out of her way. She manages to ease the tube down her throat and quickly attaches everything together.

“Compress the bag,” Evan directs his order at me, keeping his eyes down as he assesses her other injuries that have already been checked. Veronica steps aside so I can take over ventilating. My blood is boiling, but I know I need to remain calm and indifferent right now.

Two hours later, the ER is calm again but that doesn’t mean my annoyance has died down. Evan continues his bossy demeanor, and I’m so irritated with myself that I let him get to me. I’ve done that procedure so many times in my career and have never had issues, but him watching me and shouting made my nerves get the best of me.

I’m sitting in front of my locker, taking angry bites of my licorice when I hear the door behind me open. I immediately know it’s him when the hair on the back of my neck stands up, and I prepare myself for an ass chewing.

“That’s a gross habit,” he starts, walking to his locker that I realize is next to mine.

I snort at his first choice of words. “Eating?”

He scoffs, digging around his bag. “That isn’t eating. It’s high in sodium and carbs and filled with corn syrup.”

“Well I could be a smoker. Or drinker.” I smirk. “Or I could—”

“Or you could eat food that’ll help sustain your energy levels instead of falling asleep on the job.”

“I did not fall asleep on the job!” I stand up, appalled at his accusations.

“Could’ve fooled me.”

“You screaming and shouting at me while I’m trying to do something isn’t how I work!”

“You want to be an ER doctor at a trauma hospital?” he taunts, stepping right into my space. “Then act like it. There’s no time for emotions or your feelings to get hurt. You focus on the patient and you get your shit done. Bagging is med school 101 so forgive me if I have my doubts about you, Dr. Bell.”

We’re both breathing hard and my heart races at an intense speed. Knowing what he looks like under those scrubs has my brain malfunctioning on a witty response. I want to grab his face and kiss the attitude right out of him, but I won’t let him win.

“Though considering your last name, I expected more from you.”

His words sting and I know he said them to get under my skin, but I won’t give him the satisfaction that it hurt. I ignore him and pretend it doesn’t phase me at all.

“Goodnight, Dr. Bishop. Hope you sleep well,” I say smugly, widening my smile before taking another bite of my licorice.

I see the corner of his lips twitch and the thought of driving him crazy the same way he does to me makes me do a little victory dance in my head.

“Sweet dreams, Dr. Bell.” He reaches for his bag and before he turns, grabs the half-eaten piece of licorice out of my hand and walks out.

Bastard.

Always Mine (Liam & Madelyn Duet #1) by Kennedy Fox

College parties, beer, and one-night stands—that was my life.
Now, I hunt down criminals, ethically or not, but if no one’s asking, then I’m not telling. Drinking and women are still included, though I can’t seem to forget the girl who almost gave me her virginity. She would’ve until I realized she was too young, and I wasn’t looking to get thrown into jail.

In a twist of fate, we’re reunited, except she’s no longer underage but still equally off-limits.
After ignoring her relentless advances, she starts to wear me down. I only have so much willpower when she’s around, running her smart mouth and showing off her impeccable dance moves.

Just when my restraint starts to crumble, my poor choices finally catch up with me, putting us both in danger.
There’s no easy way to explain why I betrayed her, but I’ll do whatever it takes to keep her safe—even if it means breaking her heart.

ALWAYS MINE is a slow-burn, intense romance wrapped up in a suspenseful beautiful love story. It’s book 1 in the Liam & Madelyn duet and must be read first.

Excerpt Always Mine (Liam & Madelyn Duet #1) by Kennedy Fox

Liam: In case I can’t tell you later, leave your sister alone this weekend while her and Mason are gone. If you need anything at all, I’m on call. So just let me know if you do.

Maddie: New phone, who dis?

I roll my eyes. I’m not sure what I expected from her. For once, I thought maybe she’d just listen.

Liam: I’m being serious.

Maddie: When are you not serious, Hulk? I got you though. If I need a ride to the grocery store, a pedicure and mani, or someone to bang, you’re my man.

Liam: Don’t push your luck. Just promise you won’t be your normal pain in the ass self and let Soph and Mason have a nice getaway, okay?

Maddie: What’s in it for me?

Liam: A big hearty handshake from me!

Maddie: Pass.

Liam: A pat on the back?

Maddie: Now you’re just insulting me. You know I can text like a million words per minute, so you gotta offer something better than that before I start pre-writing random things to send her. Hmm…I know a lot of history facts she’d find fascinating. Could send her Bible verses we were forced to memorize as kids. Oh wait, she’ll love hearing me ramble on and on about my date last weekend. Roger. Nice guy. Lean and fit. On the swim team. Packing major heat.

I groan, tempted to call and yell at her to stop being a child. She says those things to get a reaction from me, hoping it’ll make me jealous. But knowing Maddie, she’d just get off on it more so I have to try and keep my cool the best as I can.

Liam: Why are you a thorn in my ass?

Maddie: Because it’s my favorite place to be 🙂

Liam: Yeah, I’ve noticed the past couple years.

Maddie: And yet here you are, coming to me for help.

Liam: It’s not “help” when I’m asking you to let your sister enjoy a couple days away without you or anyone intervening. You’re not that selfish, are you?

Maddie: Jesus. You had to go there, didn’t ya? FINE. Consider me on board then.

I send her a thumbs up emoji and she replies with the middle finger one. I set my phone on my nightstand and jump in the shower. Just thinking about Maddie makes me consider taking it cold. She has my heart rapidly beating and knows how to push my buttons, but that’s Maddie. She’s under my skin at all times, living there to torture the fuck out of me. I try to push the dirty thoughts of her away, but they come fast and unexpected, until I’m hard as a goddamn rock. I’ve shamelessly jerked off to the thought of her more times than I want to admit over the last few years and right now is no different. The thought of her tight ass, soft moans, and dancer’s body posed in different positions has me groaning and grunting as I stroke myself with fervor. The orgasm quickly builds and rips through me until I’m whispering her name. Thank fuck I’m home alone.

I lean my forehead against the wall, allowing the water to fall over my body with my eyes closed, trying to find the control I’ve lost. Knowing she’s a virgin—that she’d give herself to me if I wanted—makes her nothing more than forbidden fruit dangling from a tree. I can look from a distance, but I can’t touch. And it has to stay that way.

After I’m dressed, I decide I want to go out for a few drinks. I text Hunter, but he’s too busy being the perfect family man, so that leaves me with no wingman, which means nothing but trouble.

PROLOGUE
Riley
My entire body feels like it was hit by a heavy ass tractor. Even trying to roll over makes me ache and when I blink and open my eyes, I realize I’m in my hotel room at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. Light shines in through the windows, the curtains wide open, and the sun’s unforgiving as it blares in my face.

“Fuuuuuck,” I mutter as my head throbs and curse myself for how much I drank last night. Diesel, my best friend since grade school, turned twenty-one two days ago and a weekend trip to Vegas was my gift to him. I’m fourteen months older and felt it was my duty to get him shit-faced in Sin City. Getting away was the only way to properly celebrate his birthday considering we bust our asses working on the ranch six days a week. If he’s feeling the same way I am then mission accomplished.

Chuckling to myself then groaning at how badly it hurts to laugh, I attempt to slide out of bed but my arm is stuck under a body. Blinking, I realize a woman is lying against me.

With dirty blonde hair and sunkissed skin, she looks like a goddess sprawled out under the sheets that fall down to her bare waist. Looking down, I see we’re both naked and flashes of last night flood into my mind.

Zoey. Thinking for a moment, I’m almost positive that’s her name. At least I hope.

I first saw her with a group of girls at a club when I dared Diesel to participate in an amateur stripper night. Miraculously, we ran into each other again, but now, she’s here with me. My head pounds, but I try to ignore the pain as I recall all the details.

Oh God.

Glancing around, I check to make sure Diesel’s not in the other bed nor on the floor. We’re alone, thankfully. As carefully as I can, I pull my arm from underneath Zoey but before I successfully slide from under the sheets, she rolls over and wraps an arm around me and snuggles in closer.

Holy fucking hell.

Her tits are on full display as she hikes a leg over my waist, brushing over my dick. Which is now hard thanks to her.

“Good morning,” she says in the sexiest sleepy voice I’ve ever heard. Without opening her eyes, she smiles and rubs her head against my chest causing my heart to rapidly beat.

“Uh, mornin’,” I reply, swallowing hard. Within a second, Zoey’s eyes pop open and her grin falls as she takes in the room and then me.

“Oh my God!” She looks down at our naked bodies and groans. “Oh shit.” She gives me a small smile and shakes her head. “Sorry, I didn’t mean it like that.”

Chuckling, I rest a hand behind my head and she removes herself off me. “It’s okay. I didn’t have the best first reaction either. Zoey, right?” I feel like an ass for having to ask, but my memory is foggy as fuck. I know I drank a shit ton last night, but the way she squeezed her tight pussy around my dick is unforgettable.

She looks up at me then grabs the sheet and pulls it to her neck covering that sexy body I could stare at all morning. “Yeah,” she confirms. “R-something?” She winces then blushes, looking flustered as hell, which I find adorable. “I feel like a two-dollar whore. I’m so sorry. My damn head feels like someone pounded a hundred nails into it.”

“Riley,” I answer. “Don’t be sorry, darlin’. Though, I would’ve happily paid more than a couple bucks.” I flash her a wink when she glances at me and chuckles at the reality of our situation. Sitting up, she wraps the sheet around her, andI can’t help but admire how gorgeous she is. I might’ve woken up fuzzy moments ago, but the moment we fell into bed together will forever be burned into my memory.

And the…wait. I hold up my left hand and stare at the gold band around my ring finger. Memories flash through my head like photographs, nearly leaving me speechless.

“Uh, Zoey,” I say slowly, repositioning myself.

“I’m just gonna find my clothes and do the walk of shame outta here. I’m sure you want your hotel room back,” she says as if I was about to kick her out.

“Did we uh…did we…” I stutter as I remember the white chapel and Diesel’s revenge dare.

“We both woke up naked in bed, I’m quite sure we did…”

“That’s not what I’m asking.” I blow out a sharp breath and brush a hand through my hair. “Do you have a ring on your finger?”

Zoey immediately holds out her left hand and gasps. A simple but elegant gold band. She turns toward me and looks at my hand. “Oh God, I remember now.”

“Was it really legal?”

“We signed a license and said vows, so yeah, I’m pretty sure we’re legally married now.” She sucks in her lower lip then chews it.

Before I can respond, the hotel door swings open and Diesel walks in looking way too fucking chipper.

“Hey lovebirds!” The door slams behind him, and Zoey and I both wince at the noise. “How are the newlyweds feelin’ this morning?”

“Fucker,” I grumble. “Did you seriously dare me to get married last night?” I grab the comforter off the bed and wrap it around my waist so I’m somewhat decent.

Diesel’s booming laugh is all the confirmation I need. I’m gonna murder him in his sleep.

“Your mama’s gonna kill you,” he says, still chuckling. “And your grandma.”

“Try both at the same time.” I huff.

“Sorry to break up the honeymoon, but we gotta go. Pack your shit,” Diesel says, rushing around the room, shoving his things in his suitcase.

“Now?” I gape, turning and looking at Zoey who’s grabbing her little panties off the floor. She seems embarrassed as hell, but I wish she wasn’t. So adventurous and spontaneous, she brought out the best in me and we had a blast together.

“Flight’s in an hour and we still gotta get there and through security. We’ll be lucky to make it on time at this point,” Diesel says, glancing at this phone. The time constraint is ruining my ability to talk to her about this, about us. I don’t want to go, but fuck, I have to.

As Zoey picks up her bra, I round the bed and tilt her chin up so I can look into her eyes. “I’m sorry, I wish I could stay. But they’re expecting us at work tomorrow and it’s a long drive from the airport to the ranch. Can we exchange numbers at least?”

“Yeah of course.” She smiles. “We’ll need to figure out what we’re going to do.” Her face drops, and I hate that I have to leave in such a damn rush.

“Or you could come with me?” I ask hopeful. “Try to get to know each other better.” The words spill out before I can stop myself, but I don’t regret them. She’s unlike any other woman I’ve ever met.

“I-I can’t. My sister’s getting married next weekend and my life is in Phoenix.” She shrugs, holding the sheet against her body.

“Alright, I understand. I’ll text you my address in case you change your mind.” I smile, knowing the chances of that are slim. I walk to the nightstand and grab my phone. After she gives me her number, I text her so she can reach out as soon as she’s home.

“Riley, we really have to go,” Diesel urges.

“I’m going to get dressed so I can head out too.” Zoey walks around me with her arms full and goes to the bathroom. Once the door clicks shut, I quickly slip on my boxers and dig in my suitcase for clean clothes.

“So, was it awkward waking up and realizing you guys eloped?” Diesel asks with a shit-eating grin on his face.

I glower, narrowing my eyes at him as I zip up my jeans. “You’re an asshole.”

Before he can respond, Zoey walks out in the same outfit she wore last night. I catch her staring at my bare chest then shifts her eyes away as she walks toward the bed, grabbing her phone and clutch. I hate that we don’t have more than a couple minutes together and I’m being forced to dart out of here.

“Listen, Zoey…” I go to her as I slip my shirt on.

“It’s okay, Riley. We don’t have to do this.”

Diesel opens the door with his bag in hand. “Riley, c’mon. We still gotta get a cab…”

“I’m sorry. Call me soon so we can figure this out, okay?” I lean in, cup her face then kiss her cheek. “For what it’s worth, I had a really fun night, wife.” I flash her a wink, which causes her to blush. She shakes her head at me and smirks.

“Safe flight, hubby,” she mocks. I stare at her, remembering the taste of her lips, the way she moaned my name, and how perfectly her body fit against mine. Our connection was instant and while I couldn’t understand, I didn’t fight it either. From the moment our eyes locked, I knew she was special. Turns out the universe had bigger plans, bigger than either of us could have imagined. Or maybe Diesel’s to blame.

“Riley! You’ve got two seconds or I’m leaving your ass in Vegas and you can explain why to your family,” Diesel walks out frustrated as hell, and I know damn well he would really leave me.

“Goodbye,” Zoey says as I move away from her, grabbing my suitcase.

I give her an apologetic smile then spin around to catch the door before it closes, leaving her behind and feeling like complete shit about it.

Truly Mine BLURB:

The night we met in the dimly lit bar, she looked like a
brunette bombshell, and I wanted to learn her deepest secrets. With sun-kissed
skin and soulful bedroom eyes, she was pure temptation, and I was mesmerized.

As one drink led to two, I craved more of her playful banter and
taunting lips. Resisting her wasn’t an option, and we quickly became a
desperate mess of tangled limbs and hot kisses. She tasted like the sweetest
sin, but I was no saint.

Once we caught our breaths, and it became obvious that meeting
her wasn’t a coincidence, everything changed. Now I must deny her at all costs.

Friends. It’s all we can ever be.

After years of lying to myself and keeping her at a distance, I
want to pull her close. Sophie’s on my mind more than ever as my instincts to
protect her take over. Regardless of my attempts to help, she pushes me away
and makes it clear she doesn’t need me.

I’ll do whatever it takes to keep her safe, to show her I’m the
good guy, but one night takes a tragic turn for the worse when her boyfriend
and I start throwing punches.
And ends when I’m arrested for his murder.

Truly Mine Prologue

Mason

“Are you almost ready?” My roommate, Liam stands in the doorway of my bedroom chugging a beer. We’re both dressed in suits ready to go to the wedding reception our friend Hunter invited us to. His brother Hayden is finally getting married to his high school sweetheart Savannah and that’s something to celebrate. Plus, free booze.

I straighten my tie then glance at Liam. “Yeah, gimme two minutes,” I say.

He nods and walks off finishing his beer. I hear the glass clank into the recycling in the kitchen. I sit on the bed and slide on my dress shoes before running my fingers through my short hair. I scrub my hand over my face as I yawn, needing to wake up, though I’m exhausted from a long ass week. Between working for my dad in the District Attorney’s office and training in the testing lab, I have minimal free time, but it will be well worth it when I’m officially a forensic investigator in the fall. The position has basically been promised to me and I’m so damn thrilled that all the years of school and hard work is going to pay off. Investigating crime scenes isn’t an easy job, but knowing that I’ll be able to help give closure to those who lost loved ones is well worth it. Closure can mean everything.

After tucking my wallet into my back pocket, I meet Liam in the living room. He stands from the couch and follows behind me, locking up the apartment. We don’t waste any time and drive across town to a large venue where the reception is held. It’s early evening and the party’s supposed to last all night. Though I’d rather be in my bed, I’ve been looking forward to hanging out with my friends and celebrating all week. Between Hunter getting engaged to Lennon and her sister’s busy work schedules, it’s been too damn long since we’ve gotten together.

“Excited to see Sophie?” Liam teases, and I glare at him. Sophie is Lennon’s older sister. He knows I hate when he gives me shit about her, but loves getting under my skin.

“She still dating that fuckwad?” I ask since they’re always texting each other. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say they were secretly dating, but I know he really has a thing for Maddie, Sophie and Lennon’s youngest sister, though he’d never admit it. Most days, he acts as if she doesn’t exist, which drives her insane.

“Yeah. Apparently. We haven’t really talked much lately,” he says, shrugging. “Probably because of Weston. Douchebag,” he mutters.

“And you’re surprised, why? I wouldn’t want my girlfriend talking to you either.” I taunt him with a smirk as I park.

“Just because I’m better looking than you,” he fires back, and I flip him off.

We get out of the truck and walk toward the entrance where the music’s already blaring. As soon as we walk in, I see Hunter across the room smiling. Almost instantly, Liam gets pulled away by a tall blonde and leads her to the bar. The dude is a chick magnet.

Shaking my head, I head over to where everyone is sitting and smile when I meet up with Hunter and Lennon who’s holding Alison, their six-month old baby. Maddie forces a grin but I can tell she’s annoyed, probably because she’s spotted Liam at the bar flirting with Blondie. I hold back a chuckle, knowing it’s all stemmed from jealousy, and settle for a smirk, which causes her to groan. Subtle is one thing she’s not. She’s made it known she likes Liam and he continues to ignore it.

Deciding I need a drink, I grab a beer from the bar then look around, and notice Sophie isn’t here. “So where’s the other third musketeer?” I ask the girls.

Lennon glances down at her phone and shrugs, her smile slightly faltering. It’s not lost on me that she’s supposed to be here right now. Her phone dings moments later and she announces they’re finally here and going to wait in the hallway for her. Lennon hands Alison over to Maddie then Hunter follows her out of the room. Sipping my beer, I narrow in on Maddie, knowing I’ll get the truth from her.

“What’s up with Sophie?” I’m being direct, but I noticed the way Lennon tensed when I asked where she was. If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that these Corrigan sisters are bad liars.

“Not sure, honestly. She’s been weird lately. Well…since she moved in with Weston a few months ago, actually.” Maddie puts her attention back on the baby, and I can tell she wants to change the subject. They’re all being weird about this, which gives me a bad feeling.

I grind my teeth, holding back what I really want to say about Weston, not wanting to act jealous. All I’ve ever wanted is for Sophie to be happy, to be in a relationship she deserves. Something I can’t give her regardless of our past. When we met, I was still too damaged and needed more time to heal. Sophie’s a forever girl, and I was a one-night kinda guy. Now she’s taken, and I miss her being around.

It’s been awhile since I’ve seen Sophie and she’s avoided me like the plague since getting with that prick six months ago. She seems to only do whatever he wants or at least that’s what I’ve assumed. By how her sisters are acting, it’s pretty much confirmed. Before I can ask any more questions, Liam walks over and joins me, the blonde long gone, which makes Maddie more than happy. Though Liam tries to act like a hard ass most of the time, I notice how his face softens when he sees Maddie holding Allie.

A moment later, my eyes land on Weston as he forcefully drags Sophie into the room. My nostrils flare watching the scene unfold in front of me. The way he jerks her around, infuriates the fuck out of me.

Hunter and Lennon walk back to our table as I keep my eyes on Weston and watch him take Sophie to the bar. The greedy asshole orders two drinks for himself as Sophie shakes her head she doesn’t want anything. That alone is strange because we’ve gone out with the girls dozens of times and she always has a couple. Sophie turns toward us and makes eye contact with me, and I can see straight through her facade. I notice her eye is swollen and she’s tried to cover it with makeup. My jaw ticks at the thought of him hitting her. Hunter glances at me and I stiffen, causing Liam to zero in on Sophie and Weston who are having a not-so-quiet argument. Her voice is hushed while his is loud, and I can tell she’s embarrassed he’s causing a scene. She lowers her head and it’s obvious she’s trying to avoid attention.

Eventually Sophie comes over to our table, leaving her dickhead boyfriend at the bar. As soon as she’s away from him, Lennon takes the opportunity to capture Sophie and takes Allie and Maddie with her to the ladies’ bathroom, knowing damn well Weston would be ballsy as fuck to follow her there.

“Lennon’s going to get her to open up, don’t worry,” Hunter tells me, but I barely hear him. I’m microfocused on Weston, who’s snarling at me before he chugs a beer. He may not be saying a damn word, but his body language is screaming to test him, and I want to get in his face the way he got in Sophie’s.

Liam crosses his arms over his chest and warns me. “Don’t, Mason. Not the time or place.”

“Did you see Sophie’s face?” I ask, looking between the two of him. “He fucking hit her.”

Hunter frowns with a short nod.

“I’ve heard of way too many domestic cases and can see it all over her. The way he jerked her toward the bar and how she cowered around him makes it more than obvious to me.” Manipulation and controlling leads to abuse or even worse. Something isn’t right. She’s hiding something.” My chest rises and falls, and I try to calm my anger.

Her boyfriend orders another beer then walks over to us. “What are you looking at you pussy ass bitch?” His voice is wrapped in arrogance.

My brows shoot up. The fucking audacity. He’s goddamn lucky we’re in a public place right now.

Liam steps in the way, hovering over Weston like a statue, putting space between us. Considering he’s built like The Hulk and was a bouncer through college, he’s the last person anyone wants to fight.

The music in the room seems to fade away and all I can hear is my heart pumping blood through my body. Hunter tries to calm the situation, but it’s already been escalated. The last thing I want to do is ruin Hayden and Savannah’s reception. He’s intoxicated and insane.

Weston lets out a maniacal laugh and raises his voice, causing attention from some of the guests. “Where’s my whore at? I’m ready to get the fuck out of this lame party.”

Hunter stiffens, knowing shit just escalated. When Weston looks at me again, I see just how dangerous he is because he looks like he has no soul. Sophie avoiding everyone and not acting like herself makes so much sense. She’s afraid of him, of what he’ll do, and the bruises on her face and swollen eye are proof of that. My nostrils flare, and I clench my teeth, the anger fueling my adrenaline on wanting to kick this motherfucker’s ass.

“Did you hit her?” I flat out ask. I’m not gonna play games with him.

“What the fuck is it to you?” He steps around Liam and gives me an evil grin. “And I’ll do it again if she gets in my way.” He closes the gap between us and pushes me, causing me to slightly stumble back before he walks out of the room, laughing. I shouldn’t, but I allow my emotions to take control and stalk after him. Hunter and Liam follow me to the hallway.

“Hey,” I shout from behind Weston as he exits the doors leading outside. “Don’t you ever lay another fucking hand on her,” I warn him.

“Or what?” He spins around and faces the three of us. “What are you assholes really gonna do about it? You should really mind your own damn business or else…” Weston sizes me up and straightens his shoulders as if he’s ready for a brawl. Unfortunately for him, I’ve been fighting for years, and box several times a week with my trainer. I may be slender, but my hands are weapons.

“I’m not gonna fight you, dumbass. But this is your warning, you touch her again and you’ll be dealing with me.”

“With all of us,” Liam adds, stepping to my side.

Weston scoffs, rolling his eyes as if our threats mean nothing to him. He moves closer and he reeks of alcohol. “Keep it up and she’ll be dead before you even have the chance to save her,” he says with zero emotion in his voice. His words immediately cause me to see red, and I lose all control of my actions as my anger guides me forward, closing the space between us, daring him to throw the first punch.

Weston narrows his eyes then raises his arms. He swings at me, missing, and when I lift my hands, I connect with his jaw with an ear-piercing snap. It should’ve knocked him out flat on his ass, but somehow he only stumbles back. When he regains his footing, it’s as if he snaps, like a crazed psychopath. His pupils are full of rage and it’s as if he transformed from human to monster in seconds. I throw another punch, my fist smashing into his nose and Weston curls down and covers his face. As soon as I do, Hunter and Liam rush forward to pull me away, but my adrenaline is too high, and I don’t budge. When I think the asshole is done, and we step back to walk away, Weston fidgets and reaches behind his back.

“Hey!” He shouts, grabbing our attention and that’s when I realize a glock is being pointed straight at me.

“Now what, pussy boy. Looks like you brought your fists to a fuckin’ gun fight.” Blood drips down from his nose and lips that are split open and swollen, and his eye is nearly sealed shut. I slowly hold up my hands, hoping he’s not actually crazy enough to shoot me, but knowing he just might be. You don’t pull a gun on someone unless you plan to use it, and I’m not stupid enough to call his bluff.

That insane laughter returns, piercing through me. I glance over and see Hunter and Liam standing behind me, both with their arms up too and realize the situation I got them into.

I think about Sophie’s beautiful face and how amazing and sweet she is, and how long she’s been with this terror of a man. I wonder how many nights she’s gone to bed scared of him or even worse, scared for her life. Just the thought of him hurting her has me seething all over again. She’s the reason why I confronted him in the first place, because she deserves better than this piece of shit.

“Not so brave now are ya?” He steadies his hand, continuing to aim at me. I look down the barrel, hoping these aren’t my last moments alive. I go into fight or flight mode, my mind quickly spinning.

“Just put the gun down, Weston,” Hunter says calmly. “You don’t have to do this.”

“Shut the fuck up,” Weston yells. “If any of you say another goddamn word…”

My blood pumps faster when he narrows his eyes at me. I’ve seen enough shit while training to know what happens next. In my mind, I can imagine it all so vividly, the evidence they’ll collect from my splattered brains, and the pictures they’ll take when they find me on the concrete. Everything seems to happen in slow motion, and I know whatever I do next, it has to be calculated with no sudden movements.

The gun clicks as he chambers a round and the sound echoes in my ear.

This isn’t the way I want to die.

This can’t be the way my life ends. The way all of our lives ends. Fear, guilt, shock—my emotions hit me in full force as I think about the Corrigan sisters and how this will destroy them.

Fuck. I should’ve just let him walk away and let Lennon handle Sophie since they left the room anyway.

In my peripheral vision, I see Liam slightly move behind me and Weston quickly points the gun at him. He aims right above Liam’s head and fires off a warning round. The sound of the traveling bullet loud and echoes off the surrounding buildings.

“I’ll fuckin’ kill you all if you try anything,” he spits. “All three of you.”

“Weston, we can all walk away from this,” Liam says slowly. “Don’t do anything you’ll regret.” I can hear the fear in Liam’s voice though he’s steady and trying to handle the situation. I want to turn around and tell them both how sorry I am, but I don’t want to add anymore fuel to the fire.

“Now. What was that you were saying earlier?” Weston glares at me. “I’m gonna be dealing with you if I lay my hands on Sophie again? You don’t scare me, but by the look on your face, I scare the fuck out of you.”

“You’ve proven your point,” Hunter says. “Let’s just all walk away.”

“Not fuckin’ happening,” Weston hisses.

I don’t want to ruin Hayden and Savannah’s reception, but it might be inevitable. Weston won’t be happy until someone here is hurt.

“You’re gonna listen to me,” he grits. Weston continues running his mouth, feeding from the control and attention almost as if he’s performing for an audience. If only he was a paid actor with a fake gun sent here to play a sick prank, but he’s not. Instead he’s a maniac with the need to feel power; that much is obvious. Weston continues to wave the steel around, talking shit, calling me every name under the sun. A car pulls into the parking lot, which causes him to lose focus. Thankfully it gives me enough time to make a move. Within seconds, I’m charging him with all the strength I have, just like I used to do during my college football days.

We fall to the ground, and I struggle to get the gun from his tight grasp. He keeps the barrel pointed at me, which causes me to concentrate harder. Losing could mean death and that’s not an option. I hear Hunter on the phone, begging for the cops to come as soon as possible. Liam shouts at Weston to stop and I feel like I’m living my worst nightmare. His strength doesn’t seem to be weakening as our hands grip the gun and we both fight for it.

Moments later, police sirens scream out in the distance, but there’s no end to this game. There will be no winner.

We continue to wrestle for the gun.

I need to get it out of his hands before someone gets hurt. Somehow I manage to twist the gun around so it faces him, but he’s relentless.

Then it happens too fast.

I hear the shot.

I feel warmth.

I see blood.

But it’s not mine.

Hunter and Liam pull me from the ground. I’ve never seen them so shook up in my life. Adrenaline pumps through me, but my mind and body can’t seem to handle the rush or the shock as I shake them off me.

“I’m fine. I’m fine,” I reassure them then the three of us glance down at Weston.

Oh my God.

“Fuck!” Liam yells out, running his fingers through his hair and paces. A few people from the hall walk toward us, horror written on their faces. Hunter begins to panic as half a dozen squad cars pull into the parking lot.

“Calm down,” I tell everyone, knowing shit’s about to get hectic as fuck. The cops are going to take statements from all the witnesses and to analyze the crime scene. The people who surround us look at me like I’m a monster, like I’m a murderer. With blood on my hands and clothes, I’m more than guilty.

It was self-defense. I can claim it all day. I have witnesses. But it doesn’t mean a man didn’t die because of me, regardless of the fucking circumstances or not.

Several officers rush over with their guns drawn, shouting at us not to move. We all lift our hands in the air, surrendering until they can see we’re not a threat. They see Weston on the ground, the gun next to me, and how I’m covered in his blood. The team of cops keep their guns pointed as one officer runs toward me, ordering for me to get on my knees and put my hands behind my back.

I do as I’m told and then he forcefully cuffs my wrists.

As the officer helps me stand, I look at Hunter and Liam who look distraught and scared as hell.

“Wanna tell me what happened here?” the officer asks.

I ignore him, knowing my rights. I’m not saying a damn thing without counsel even if this was self-defense. I know how fucked up the justice system can be, and I’m not about to incriminate myself.

“Call Serena!” I tell Liam. “Tell her to come to the station, but not to tell my father.”

He immediately nods, knowing exactly why I’d trust her. Before I can say anything else to them, the officer pulls me away to the side.

So many thoughts run through my head. Anger mixes with regret, but I try to remember why I confronted him in the first place. I did it for Sophie, for her safety, and I’d do it again.

I look over and see officers putting up yellow caution tape around the crime scene. Seconds later, I catch sight of Lennon, Sophie, and Maddie talking to Hunter and Liam who are about to get hounded for statements. The girls look all confused and shocked and I wish I could hear what the cops were saying to them. Sophie’s hysterical, and I’m sure they told about Weston. I turn my head, not able to watch her cry for that piece of shit who threatened to kill her. I have no doubt it would’ve lead to that.

Right now, I want to be invisible. The world around me begins to fade, and I try to tune out the screams and cries of the guests as the word of what happened spreads. I’m forcefully shoved into the back of the squad car. Realization of what took place begins to set in as an officer jumps into the front seat and drives us away.

I killed Sophie’s boyfriend.

I fucked up, and I’m going to pay for it.

Truly Mine (Roommate Duet #3) by Kennedy Fox

BABY YOURS SYNOPSIS REVEAL!
**WARNING: Contains spoilers so don’t read if you haven’t read book 1 yet!**

The worst day of my life happened when Brandon died.
We had our entire future mapped out.
Careers, marriage, kids—in that order.
Then the universe threw a curveball and ended it all.
As I come to terms with everything, I learn I’m carrying his baby. Now I’m living with his roommate, the guy who’s made my life a living hell the past two years. Hunter’s now the one to hold me up when all I want to do is fall.
Knowing my religious parents will never accept the pregnancy out of wedlock, Hunter offers to be my fake husband. While I think he’s gone crazy, it’s the only plan that’ll keep them in my life. So I do whatever it takes to make our relationship believable—kissing, touching, even letting him hold me when we sleep. The lines are so blurred neither of us want to admit we’re no longer pretending.
The guilt of what we’re doing eats me alive as I struggle to deal with my emotions. I push him away, but he pulls me closer, showing me how he’s always felt.
Just as I begin to follow my heart, I learn Hunter’s been keeping secrets.
And I’m left to make the hardest decision of my life…

Finally, I am finishing this lovely duet! It has been one hell of a ride, and I am happy to have been part of it.

Hunter and Lennon are so perfect for each other and I loved how their story finally came to a happy ending.

The way Baby Mine ended, I thought for sure he is going to be Jenna’s baby daddy, and I am actually happy that it was a false alarm and things did not get more complicated.

The trip to Lennon’s parents was an eye opening for them. You can actually see the love that they feel for each other, even if they pretend on it.

As soon as Lennon finds out what Hunter has been keeping a secret for so long, she realizes that she is in love with him. I feel like this book is a beautiful closure for Baby Mine and a preannouncement for the next book to follow the story of Mason and Sophie in Truly Mine, coming out July 2019.

Oh, and Truly Mine starts with a big cliffhanger at the end of this book!

Baby Mine was an emotional roller-coaster for me in every way. I am not overly fond with a love triangle or a heroine belonging to another man, but that fact is Hunter fell in love with Lennon without so much contact. So, it’s not really cheating, just unrequired love.

Sad part is she chose his best friend, Brandon. Worst part is, she moved in with them and has been living with them for the past 2 years.

While reading this book, I hurt along with Hunter. If you ever felt reciprocated love before, you will too. If not, picture something you crave with your whole body and soul and know that you will never have it. This is how Hunter feels for Lennon.

Everything falls apart when Brandon dies suddenly, and two broken souls are left to heal together.

OMG, that cliffhanger! Seriously, that was such a twist I did not see coming, because I was so focused on the chemistry between the two of them, that I forgot anyone else exists.

Baby Yours Excerpt:

Lennon’s POV:

“I know you said you’ll always be around for me and the baby, and while that might be true right now, there’ll come a point when you can’t, and I’m trying to accept that.” I suck in a deep breath. “I don’t want you to feel obligated to me, Hunter. When you’re ready to date and forget about this fake marriage, just let me know. It’s tearing me apart knowing my fucked-up situation holds you back. I can’t be that person. I won’t be.”

He tenses, grabbing the steering wheel tight before glancing over at me. “You have nothing to worry about. I know we’re just friends, Lennon. So stop believing you’re going to ruin some relationship of mine that doesn’t even exist because you’re not. I don’t know if you noticed or not, but I haven’t been with anyone in a while—and before you even start, it’s not because of you—I don’t want to be with anyone. Especially not right now.” His words linger, filling the car.

I open my mouth to say something, realizing how confused I am thinking about this. Instead of speaking, nothing comes out. I want to ask him how he can feel that way, how he can be so content with this plan or how it could mess things up with his potential dating life. But I don’t. My hormones are completely out of whack, and I’m overly emotional. I need to gain control because in ten minutes, we’ll be face to face with my parents. I can’t show up upset or crying with a man I’m claiming to be my husband. It would be the worst first impression ever. My mother will instantly notice and it’ll be a conversation I don’t want to have before I drop the pregnancy bomb on them.

“Listen. We’re almost there, and I think it might be best to put this all on hold and talk about it later when we’re back home. Right now, we have a fake marriage to pull off. We have to get into character and play the part of the madly in love newlyweds for my unsuspecting parents.” I look over at him, and he nods in agreement.

“That’s probably for the best,” he says, turning down my parents’ street.

I swallow down the knot in my throat as the house comes into view. We pull into the driveway, and I try to gain an ounce of strength though I feel like I’m crumpling from the inside out. Hunter grabs my hand and squeezes.

“Do I look pregnant?” I ask him with a smirk. I’m purposely wearing a baggy shirt because although I’m only fifteen weeks pregnant, my small bump is noticeable in tight shirts, and they can’t know how far along I really am. It would ruin our entire story.

“You look great,” he reassures me with a wink, which should calm me down, but I’m hit with a rush of nerves. “Let’s do this, wifey.”

“What if this is a disaster? What if my parents freak the hell out? What if they figure out we’re lying and this was all for nothing? What if—?”

“Lennon.” Hunter’s deep voice snaps my gaze up to his eyes. He wraps a hand around the nape of my neck and pulls me close until our lips collide. I instantly relax, letting his mouth erase all my fears. He pushes back, and I frown. My breathing is erratic as I replay what just happened in my mind. “Better?” he croaks out as if the kiss affected him too.

“Uh-huh,” I manage to say, thoughts of my parents vanished. Why does he have this effect on me? I blink, wishing I had time to figure it out, but knowing I don’t.

A chuckle escapes him. “Good. We’ve got this.”

“Right.” I nod in agreement. “Did you just kiss me to get me to shut up?”

“I’d never.” His light tone has me thinking otherwise. “Let me say this, I’ve not met a woman’s parents who haven’t loved me.”

I scoff with a chuckle. “Oh, overconfident, are we? Well, my parents aren’t like most,” I remind him.

Hunter lifts my hand and presses a soft kiss to my knuckles. Electricity streams through me when my eyes meet his. “It’s going to be so damn believable, we might end up believing we’re actually married by the end of the trip.”

His encouraging words have me laughing, and I feel a lot better. Hunter knows what he’s doing, and we’ve prepared for this.

Hunter gives me a reassuring smile, then opens the door to get out. Rounding the car, he comes over to open mine. He helps me out, being the sweet gentleman I’ve only seen these past few months. As we walk around to the trunk, I glance down at my left ring finger and wonder what the actual fuck I’m doing. There’s no time to break it down, though, because my mother’s voice causes me to still. When I look up, I plaster a smile on my face. She closes the space between us, then pulls me into a big hug with my father behind her.

“Lennon! I’m so happy you’re finally here,” she squeals. “How was the flight?”

Hunter pops his head up from the trunk and gives her his infamous boyish grin. My mother’s eyes meet mine right before her jaw falls to the ground. He does seems to have that effect on people. My mother included.

“Mom. Dad. This is Hunter,” I introduce. He gives my father a friendly handshake, and my mother hugs him. I think I even catch her squeezing his muscles.

“So is this my surprise, honey?” she asks, grinning wide.

Hunter lets out a hearty laugh.

“So now you know where Sophie and Maddie get it from,” I tell him, my cheeks heating.

Mom’s eyes light up. “So you’ve met all my girls?”

“I have,” he tells her, but before the conversation can go any further, my father suggests we head inside, which I’m grateful for. Hunter swings his duffel bag over his shoulder and grabs my carry-on as Dad takes my giant suitcase. As we’re walking to the door, Hunter places his hand on the small of my back, making my entire body light up. I’m trying so damn hard to find my confidence as we step inside.

I keep my left hand hidden and so does Hunter, not wanting my parents to notice the rings until we’re ready. Dad suggests we go into the sitting room and catch up.

“Do you guys want some coffee? I’ll get a pot ready,” Mom asks, and we both nod, though my heart races because she’ll definitely notice that I’m not drinking caffeine.

“That’d be great, Mrs. Corrigan,” Hunter says. Dad takes a seat as Mom heads into the kitchen. Hunter and I sit on the sofa across from him. We chat about the flight, my job at the school, and he asks how Sophie and Maddie are doing. Hunter’s as calm as can be, keeping eye contact and loosely resting his arm around my waist, but I feel as if I’m unraveling one thread at a time.

It’s easy to lie to them over FaceTime, but I’m not sure I can actually do it to their faces. I try to swallow down my insecurities because so much rides on this week.

Mom comes back and sits next to Dad. I know this is when the real grilling will begin.

“So…are you the Hunter I spoke to on the phone a few months ago when Lennon was avoiding me like I was the plague?” She’s being direct, almost too direct.

Hunter’s smile doesn’t falter a bit. “Yes, ma’am. I was. I didn’t want you to worry.”

Mom nods. “I appreciate that because I was, especially after everything that happened with Brandon.”

I was hoping she wouldn’t bring him up so quickly. The color drains from my face as I think about this trip and how I was supposed to be here with him. The guilt of what we’re doing stabs me in the gut, knowing how different it’d be with Brandon by my side, but it’s too late. It’s now or never. Mom continues, but I’m lost in my head until I hear her next words.

“Are you Lennon’s new boyfriend?” She looks accusingly between us, her brows furrowed as if she’s trying to solve a mystery.

I open my mouth, but I can’t seem to get the words to come out. I choke, knowing I need to say something, but I’m at a loss.

“Actually,” Hunter speaks up when he notices I’m freezing. Moving a few inches closer, he tightens his grip on me then grins. “I’m her husband.”
