Out of Breath (The Breathing Series, Book 2) by Rebecca Donovan
Barely Breathing is the second book in the million-copy bestselling Breathing Series.
“I’ve spent most of my life trying to make it to a future that still hasn’t happened, or avoid a past that won’t let me go. I don’t remember when I’ve ever just stopped to live in the present, to hold on to the seconds I’m in.”
Emma Thomas’s struggle with an abusive home life came to a heart-pounding conclusion in the final chapters of Reason to Breathe, the first installment of the Breathing Series—Rebecca Donovan’s bestselling romantic-thriller (USA Today). Now her secret life has been exposed, and her tormentor can’t hurt her anymore. Yet some are still haunted by that night. The bruises may have faded, but scars and fears remain. How will she reclaim her life when she’s barely breathing?

I think most of us expected a fast reunion between Emma and Evan, especially since they went through so much and their love was so beautiful. Now, we find ourselves in Emma’s world at Standford, finally, but that is after two whole years, with new characters. We were not expecting that, honestly. The fact that the author made us be ok to disregard their past, their connections and try to make us ok with the present. Emma is not what we expected, and that makes Rebecca Donovan one hell of an author, because she forced us to grow just as Emma does, and live the moment. Emma is still a shell of herself, still pushes people aside, but at least Sara is still there.
I enjoyed the difference between the two first books, this being less intense and heart-wrenching, and maybe hope that she and Evan do find themselves again and reconnect. But that changes a bit when we meet Cole, who manages to break in and join Emma at her pace and try to be there for her. The strange part is that I see Cole as a good guy, and impossible to hate.
But she does meet Evan again, and I remember being at the edge of my seat to see what happens next and who speaks first and what they say. Especially when Emma is on this vacation with Cole… but the way Evan still fights, makes me be “team Evan” all the way. Sorry, Cole, you can go now.
I loved the courage Evan has and the way he fights for her and shows her his way of life and how being together is what she deserves.
“I’m not supposed to live without you. And you re not supposed to live without me. We’re in this life together. Without each other, we’re not really living.”
My feeling regarding this book are so mixed, that I had to wait a while to start to re-read it again. Thank God for light and funny books that helped me worn the angst down.
“Out of Breath” is the third and final book of the “Breathing” Series. Here you can see the reading order.
