The owner of the house, Holden “Max” Maxwell is surprised by the beautiful woman who turns up at his door. But when Nina becomes ill, Max spends days nursing her back to health. A private man with a broken heart, Max finds himself drawn to the strong-willed woman. Soon it becomes impossible for Nina and Max to deny their growing attraction to one another. Yet even as these two wounded lovebirds think about taking a chance on a relationship, a dangerous secret from Max’s past emerges-and threatens to end their love for good.

The Gamble was one of my first reads of Kristen Ashley’s and it got stuck in my mind forever. Even though Kristen Ashley writes books filled with humor, drama and real-life crisis, it had my heart skip a bit on some of these scenes here.
I started reading her books in the order she advised on her website, starting with Rock Chick series, but before Rock Chick Revolution, we were advised to read Breath from Colorado Mountain series. So far none of the characters in the Rock Chick appeared here. The only common mention is Zip’s Gun Shop.
Nina Sheridan is an American who lives in England and decided to take a 2 weeks’ time out from her engagement with a boring Englishman. She rents out Holden Maxwell’s A-frame cabin down the mountain, but due to a mistake, he’s there too. During one funny encounter, he decides he wants her. The rest is just as funny and beautiful.
This book is a second chance at a happy life for Max, since he’s lost his wife 10 years ago in a tragic accident.
The story is told from Nina’s POV, and I admit, I would have wanted more from Max.
If you’ve read Rock Chick series before, the love pace is not that fast, but still are some similarities on how men quickly figure out their desire upon seeing her match.
Nina is one hell of a woman and I like my heroines sharp, funny and strong. Furthermore, there are scenes which will not disappoint you, and the way Max reacts to them is plain gorgeous.
The epilogue will show you a happy end to a beautiful life together, with babies and weddings.
