Cake (Cake #1) by J. Bengtsson
-A reclusive rock star going through the motions-
Jake McKallister might have been a rock star, but he was no ordinary one. Surviving an unspeakable crime as a young teen had shaped him into a guarded workaholic, and he now lived his life trying to forget. If it hadn’t been for music and the redemption he found through it, he might not have survived. Career success came easily for him. Personal connections did not.
-A vivacious college student embracing life-
When outspoken and fun-loving Casey Caldwell was paired with the famously reserved musician for a friend’s wedding, she was prepared for the worst. What could they possibly have in common? She was a bubbly talker; he was a media-shy loner. His life was filled with music; she couldn’t carry a tune. She’d enjoyed a happy childhood; his was a well-publicized nightmare.
-Their worlds are about to collide-
Despite their obvious differences, Jake and Casey found each other, and her light balanced out his darkness. Would their love be strong enough to survive the weight of his tragic past?

Before reading this review, there is something you need to know about me! I do not cry while reading, I mean when people say they ugly cry, maybe I wet my eyes a lil’ bit, but usually I am very hard to turn into tears while reading. If we’re talking about movies, well.. that’s my soft spot, but books.. not quite.
While I say this, there are some books that make my throat close up and I feel it in my tummy… and this book was one of them. I think I get emotional when I really like the character, in this instance I fell pretty quick for Jake McKallister.
I started reading this because someone recommended it as a slow burn, close to MZ, but while the book is good, MZ is another level. I am still, yet to find, someone to compare her books to.
Jake McKallister is a Rockstar attending his bother’s wedding and he meets Casey Caldwell. She blows him away with her jokes and funny comebacks and he’s immediately hooked.
From there there’s the journey they get to know each other while Jake still deals with his trauma after being kidnapped as a teen and assaulted 10 years ago. This is the sensitive topic the author deals with, so if this is a trigger for you, avoid it.
The name of the book Cake comes from Casey + Jake, which I find it all too lovely.
After finishing this book, I feel like I had a heavily conversation with someone telling mt his / her story, and I breaks my heart for those who’ve dealt with this or any kind of trauma. Bonus points to having a HEA.
I cannot wait to dive into the other books in this series.
